Newborn Photography in Adelaide: 10 Things New Parents Shouldn’t Be Worried About When Booking a Newborn Shoot
One of the most magical things I get to do every week is spend time with precious newborns and their doting families. Naturally, this special period is a time of great change and transition – there are so many unknowns, and your photography session should be one of the most remarkable moments in these early days. Often, though, they have a lot of ‘shoulds’ around them (likely myths more than fact), that become concerning to expecting and new parents. Allow me to set the record straight on what newborn photography in Adelaide is really like when you go with a newborn specialist…
Myth #1: There’s an ideal time
Many photographers will tell you that you only have a 14-day window from birth to capture the perfect shots of bub in their squishiest, most beautiful, peaceful state. Let’s just dispel this myth on the spot. While yes, the first 14 days are optimal, if you happen to schedule your shoot for the 15th, or even the 21st day, your gorgeous one will still be sublime. There are a multitude of reasons why you might not manage in the first 14 days – maybe you gave birth prematurely, maybe you or baby had to return to hospital, or maybe had to stay in longer … or… maybe you simply forgot to book in your newborn photographer in the excitement leading up to the birth! Please don’t worry. A good photographer will still ensure you have beautiful memories captured no matter what. But if you’re particularly concerned and want to ensure those tiny, newborn curly poses, make sure you book early to cover your bases! Most photographers would prefer you are booked by your second trimester.
Myth #2: Baby has to be asleep
There’s a common misconception out there that bub absolutely must be asleep for the shoot to ‘work’. Well, as a mum and newborn photography specialist in Adelaide, let me tell you, not every baby is a sleeper, and some of the best shots I’ve taken have been of newborns who are wide awake! It’s just as normal for kiddo to be awake as asleep – life with newborns (as you will have gathered) is totally unpredictable, and we just roll with it on the day! In my more than 15 years of doing this, I have never once had to reschedule a shoot for an ‘awake’ baby… it’s totally fine!
Myth #3: My baby hates being naked
Sorry parents, probably not true! Remember, they’ve just spent the last 9 months completely without clothes, so it’s more likely, ‘my baby hates being cold or feeling the breeze on their delicate skin’! I keep my studio roasty toasty so that it feels like a tropical paradise, and bub is completely at one with the space. Parents are always amazed at how happy their little ones are to be asleep given their complete lack of clothing! (Also, I can neither confirm nor deny my nickname might well be ‘the baby whisperer’… no idea why though!!)
Myth #4: It’s going to be a disaster if bub doesn’t have a nappy on!
As an experienced newborn photographer, and mum of three myself, I am in no way phased by a little bit of poo. Yes, if baby isn’t wearing a nappy, there’s a chance they’ll ‘get their toileting on’ on my lovely white blankets (and sometimes on ME!). But trust me, it’s nothing I haven’t seen before, and nothing that can’t be washed away. I’ve done literally hundreds of newborn shoots, and it would be impossible to remember every time a wee or a poo made an entrance. It’s totally normal and totally fine!! We may possibly capture a great 21st photo too! 😉
MYTH #5: TODDLERS ARE NOT WELCOME
Not in my universe! How on earth would I manage to capture magic of the entire family if some of the family weren’t present?! I’m well versed in the language of toddler, and used to the standard toddler ruckus that comes up from time to time during a shoot. There are few things better than seeing a toddler interacting with their brand new sibling. So please, bring them along and don’t worry for a second – it’s all part of the experience!
Myth #6: It’s easy to choose someone to do your newborn photography in Adelaide
Well, it should be! On the day of your photoshoot (and in fact well before!), you should be completely confident that your photographer knows what they’re doing, has experience with newborns and produces imagery in the aesthetic you’re after. There should be literally no question marks left on the list! By opting for a newborn specialist with a demonstrable track record, you will be confident you’re in safe hands.
Myth #7: My post-baby body is going to be ‘a problem’
Let me tell you mama, no matter what, you are beautiful, whether that’s 10 days post-partum or 10 years! There is nothing more powerful than the experience of growing and birthing a child. While your body may have changed (temporarily) your soul still shines through. Wear clothes that make you feel uplifted and like the amazing goddess you are!! And just remember I’ve been photographing mums for 15+ years who have just given birth, I know how to pose and make you look your best while capturing that beautiful connection with your new baby.
Myth #8: Newborn photography in Adelaide is expensive
Well I suppose we could talk here about relativity to ‘til the cows come home, but what it boils down to is this: Just like any other piece of art, this is an investment. You are not just frittering your money away on a dinner out or the latest bit of plastic from Kmart or the latest iphone that you’ll upgrade in a few years time. And unlike ‘normal’ art, this commissioned artwork captures a most unique and special time in your family’s specific history. Never to be repeated, and oh-so fleeting. So let me ask you… How much is that worth to you?
Myth #9: Newborn photoshoots are dangerous
Sure, if you’re working with someone inexperienced, there are risks. Which is why I always encourage parents to do their research first! You should be able to get a good feel for your photographer’s approach to safety by the imagery that features on their portfolio.
I am extremely safety-conscious, and never, ever compromise your baby’s safety ‘for the sake of a good shot’. I have photographed hundreds of babies, attended numerous workshops and learned from neonatal physios and specialists to ensure your baby’s safety. But of course, if you have any concerns regarding your shoot, I encourage you to speak up so we can talk things through.
Myth #10: You need to have a clear plan where your photos will go before you even book
This is a tricky one. Some people will have ideas, and that’s great, but part of the experience is consulting with your photographer about which products to develop and where they would fit in your home. (And if it’s not part of the service, it should be!) Don’t feel like you even know where to start? – Don’t worry we photographer-types have a keen eye for design and are really great at bringing the best concepts together for your home! This is actually a huge part of your photography experience with me. I even have awesome, state of the art software that will show you exactly what a wall collection can look like on the wall of your OWN home.
It’s more than just pretty photos. I want your photography experience to be wonderful, easy and, of course, I want you to love your end results. With an experienced photographer there should be no need to worry. You should be able to relax and enjoy your session knowing that you will love your photos and products.

“Melissa is an incredible photographer who is so kind, thoughtful and takes so much pride in her work. She made us feel so comfortable during our sessions. We literally drove over 4 hours to go back to her for our second baby because we loved our first newborns session so much 🤣
We can’t thank you enough Melissa.”
