When it comes to family photography sessions, our picturesque city of Adelaide has so many amazing locations to choose from it’s hard to know where to start! From the wild textures of our conservation parks to the casual simplicity of our beaches, we are spoiled for choice! Choosing a location for your family portraits usually come under one of two categories: sentimentality, or aesthetic appeal. Whatever your reason, it’s clear your options are wonderfully varied. Here are some of my favourites:
Adelaide’s Beaches: The quintessential family photography spot
We have stunning beach locations to choose from here in Adelaide. What’s even better is that as much as all beaches have that ‘sand and water’ thing covered, each of ours has its own distinct personality. If you love the feeling of sand between your toes, beautiful snaps at sunset and light and airy soft pastel tones, then a beach family photoshoot may be for you. Our best beaches.
- Largs Bay Beach – MY FAVOURITE go to location
- Grange Beach
- Port Willunga
- Sellicks Beach
- Aldinga Beach
Recreation and conservation parks: getting back to nature
One of the best things about living in Adelaide is our access to so many brilliant parks and conservation areas. What’s even better is that these locations are seasonal – book your family photography session for one end of the year, you’ll get dry grasses and straw tones, or for the middle of the year, lush green, long grasses. I really do love the natural setting of these locations and the texture it adds to your portraits. My top spots are all within 30 minutes of the city.
Here are a few:
- Cobbler Creek – my FAVOURITE go to conservation location
- Anstey Hill
- Morialta Conservation Reserve
- Black Hill
- Brownhill Creek
- Shepherds Hill Creek
- Greenhill Recreation Park
- Mount Osmond
- Belair National Park
I wanted to take a minute here to also point the abundance of walking trails along The River Torrens Linear Park Trail. There are literally hundreds of perfect spots along the 30km trail. I’ve personally photographed around Athelstone, Campbelltown, Klemzig, Felixtow, Walkerville and Lockleys. There’s bound to be many more hidden gems.
Beyond nature: Family photography in urban spaces and heritage buildings
As much as nature provides enormous inspiration for my family photography
sessions, there is just as much to be gained from a session with a more urban
backdrop. The bustling streets of Port Adelaide or any number of heritage-listed buildings that line Adelaide’s history-laden streets are particularly striking and are the scenes of some of my favourite family sessions.
Further afield…
There are a huge number of locations beyond the city limits that I adore. I’ll list some below, but please keep in mind some of these will be far enough that an additional travel fee will be applicable. Having said that, these locations are so spectacular, it’s always totally worth the journey…
- Hahndorf
- Stirling
- Adelaide Hills
- Barossa Valley (and let’s face it, SA wineries beyond the Barossa hold
their own as well!) - Gawler
- Blackwood Forest
- Mt Crawford Forest
- Kuitpo Forest
to your family. Ultimately, a location that resonates with you and your family will be the key to creating the memories you’ll be able to hang on your wall forever…
